The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

One of my favourite memories comes from about 1958 and 1958. I was in grade 3.

I had started school in 1956. One of the really neat things about school was that we had a story time after lunch. We were expected to come back into the class room and put our heads down as the teacher read us a story. It was so relaxing that sometimes I would almost fall asleep. It was also fun to hear stories that I had never heard before.

One of the stories that I really liked was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

I cam home one day and told Mom how neat it was to have my teacher read to me, and how much I really liked The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Mom suggested that I get the book from the Bookmobile that was parked near the Union Second/Fourth Ward Building on Monday afternoon.

That began a custom we held for many nights. Just before bed, Mom would sit down on the couch with Joe, Darrel, Robyn and I. She would open The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and start to read from where we had left off the night before. She would read one chapter and no more. We always asked for another chapter, but she never read more than one.

After she finished reading the first of the Oz books to us, I think she read the rest of the "original 14" books. I got so enthused about those books that I read as many of the other Oz books as I could find in the library and Bookmobile.

The books I think Mom read to us were
  • The Wondereful Wizard of Oz
  • The Marvelous Land of Oz
  • Ozma of Oz
  • Doroty and the Wizard in Oz
  • The Road to Oz
  • The Emerald City of Oz
  • The Patchwork Girl of Oz
  • Tik-Tok of Oz
  • The Scarecrow of Oz
  • Rinkitink in Oz
  • The Lost Princess of Oz
  • The Tin Woodman of Oz
  • The Magic of Oz
  • Glinda of Oz
