Mom taught me something wonderful in 1964 – but I didn’t know it then.
Grandma Rees had a stroke in 1964. She was unable to do anything for herself. She was 74; Grandpa Rees was 79, and they were still living on the farm. We were living in Union; Carl was living in Draper; Solly was living in Magna; Gertrude was up in
I am not certain of the reasons, but it was decided that Mom would drive to Draper Monday through Friday and take care of Grandma. She did everything for her. She bathed her, fed her, and stayed with her while Grandpa took care of things on the farm. Dad worked a full day. All of us were in school (Connie had just started grade 1, and I had just started grade 9 at
I remember waiting at the drug store near Reams after school every night for Mom to come down 9th East. She would pick me up, and we would go home. At the time, I didn't realize what a sacrifice she was making.
But the realization of that sacrifice has grown with me over the years. I now see it as a defining moment in my life. My mother gave selfless service to her mother in law.

The Stroke

I too remember this time in our lives. Mom had originally signed up to be a room mother for me. I was so excited. As the Halloween party was announced at school I remember the teacher explaining that we would be playing games and that the room mothers would bring treats. I was so excited. I came home and asked mom what treats we were going to have. It was then that she explained to me that she would not be there and that her place as room mother had been filled by another mom. She would be a grandma's house taking care of her. It was a hard lesson to learn for a 6 year old.
Your mom was the most selfless person I know and a great example of always giving and thinking of others.
