Mom and Running Away

In August of 1956, I told Mom I was running away to live with Mrs Leyland.

In July of that year, I started Kindergarten at the Union School. (The school has long since been torn down. It stood just to the west of Hillcrest High School. If I can find a picture, I'll edit the post and put it in.) I was nervous at going to school, even for the brief time that I would be there. I went with Mom and met my teacher, Mrs. Eva Leyland. She was a widow who lived just a couple of blocks from the school. She was very kind to me.

I found that I loved school! I felt very grown up, and fell in love with my teacher. I decided that I wanted to live with her forever and ever. (I can only suppose that I thought that she lived at the school, for I have never been in her home.)

Mom was very understanding and helped me get some of my things together. When I had the stuff together, I chickened out! All of a sudden I was frightened of leaving home. So Mom hugged me and told me it was OK. She also talked with Mrs. Leyland, and I ended up in her class for Grade One.

I never announced that I was running away again!

I remember Mrs Leydan (sic). Do you remember when I got in truble for using barn yard language in her class? Mom threatened to wash my mouth out with soap... I don't remember if it happened... but my language improved.

No, I don't remember that!

I'm pretty sure that Mom would have done it. When we were young, she pretty much did what she said she was going to do.

I remember the name as Mrs. Eva Leyland - not Leydan. Are you sure that is what it was?

I also attempted to run away once. It was when Robyn and I had the little room off of the Kitchen. I am not sure why but I felt that I had to sneak out. I packed my little suitcase and placed it just outside the doorway. When I finally thought that I could "make my break" I went to get my suitcase only to find that Mom had instructed Robyn to unpack it. As a side note...I also remember it as Leyland. She was my kindergarten teacher for one Day.

Ken, I am sure that you are correct. It was Leyland... Type O.!
