Math Contest

Christy's comments about Dad and car repair struck home this morning as I read them. I remember an instance where Dad and Mom went far beyond the call of duty to help me out.

I had been invited to participate in a mathematics contest to be held at Brigham Young University . I think I was in grade 9. (At any rate, I wasn't able to drive myself down to Provo.) The contest was to be held on a Saturday morning. I asked Mom and Dad if I could go. They were supportive, but pointed out that this was Friday evening, and the car (the blue 1956 Ford station wagon) was not running well enough to get us down there and back.

I guess Dad and Mom could see how much I wanted to go. We finished our chores, and then Dad started to look at the car to find out what the problem was. He located the problem. (I don't remember what it was.) He needed a part. By this time it was about 9:00 PM. He located a parts store that had the part. He and I drove to the store, picked up the part, and drove back. Now it was 10:00 PM, and I needed to be at BYU by 9:00 the next morning.

Dad and I (I wasn't much help!) installed the part, and put things back together. We finished at about 11:00 PM. Then it was off to bed.

The next morning Dad drove me down to BYU, waited for me while I competed (I didn't win), and then drove me back home.

I don't know what he did while I was occupied with the mathematics contest. I do know that when I wanted something very badly, Dad and Mom were there for me.

Do you also remember Dad taking... or picking you up from college at BYU... I went with him and it was a blizzard, the wipers didnt work. We took the frontage road all the way. Dad had something that he kept reaching out of the drivers window and brushing off the snow. Seems crazy now..
