Dad Hot Rods on State Street

Dad, Mom, Connie and I were in the 1959 Chevy. We were on state street. I don't remember where we had been or where we were going. But, we were headed south and we were at the light at VineStreet on State Street. Anyway we are just sitting there minding our own business and this guy pulls up next to us. I am not sure what he was driving ...I think it might have been a GTO or maybe a Barracuda... I don't know. Well this kid thinks he is cool. He starts reving his engine and looking around to see if anyone notices. Dad is so cool.... he doesn't acknowledge the guy... but, he looks at mom and says what do you think? He has this little twinkle in his eye and for a moement it is as if Connie and I aren't even there. Mom just reached over and gave Dad's hand a squeeze. Dad chuckles a little bit and says "OK". The light changes and just like that, Dad raps the engine up and pops the clutch.... no sound.... of screeching tires... just perfect transfer of power to the wheels. Even with the three on the tree Dad goes through the gears smoothly and next thing I know we are at the light on 53rd. The guy pulls up next to us and there is no reving the engine... I don't even thinks he looks over at us... Dad just chuckles. The light changes and we slowly go on our merry way....

This sounds familiar.... but not as clear as for craig. I think it must have been a boy thing.

So cool! I never was with Dad and Mom when they went for a drive. I do remember them talking about driving from Union to Draper in 10 minutes! (This in the late 50s and early 60s when speed limits and roads were less conducive to higher speeds!)

The 59 Chev with the 348 was a moving sleeper of a machine. It looked like an old man's sedan, but it could really fly.
